A false ceiling should solve wiring, lighting or proportion. If it does none of those, keep the slab. Compact Mumbai homes benefit most from a slim peripheral cove that leaves the centre high.
Gypsum versus POP
Gypsum boards are factory-flat, quick to install and ideal for straight modern lines. POP is mixed on site and works better for curves and small adjustments, but creates more mess. Both perform well when the framing, joints and paint preparation are correct.

How much height can you lose?
A basic ceiling needs roughly 100–150 mm below the slab. Keep at least 2700 mm clear in the centre where possible. If the builder ceiling is already low, use surface-mounted profiles or wall lights instead of dropping the whole room.
Layer light instead of adding spots
Use cove light for ambient glow, profiles or pendants for tasks and focused spots for art. Put each layer on a separate switch. Choose one colour temperature—usually 3000K for homes—so materials keep the same colour across the room.
Checks before work starts
- Map AC drain, ducts and access panels.
- Centre chandelier points on furniture, not the empty room.
- Choose replaceable LED drivers.
- Photograph all wiring before the boards close.
- Test every circuit before final paint.
