How to choose the right interior designer in Mumbai

Choose the person who explains the unglamorous parts—drawings, hardware, site supervision and exclusions—not only the person with the prettiest renders.

An interior project is a financial decision and a working relationship lasting weeks. A clear process matters more than a large photo gallery. Use these questions before comparing design fees or discounts.

1. What exactly is in the scope?

Ask whether design, 3D views, working drawings, civil work, electrical, plumbing, painting, furniture, curtains and cleaning are included. Every exclusion should be written. ‘Turnkey’ means nothing unless the list underneath it is specific.

2. Are materials named, not described?

A quote should state plywood brand and grade, shutter finish, hinge and channel brand, thicknesses, counter material and paint system. Words such as premium, marine finish or German quality are not specifications.

3. What will I approve before production?

At minimum: dimensioned plans, elevations for each carpentry wall, electrical and ceiling plans, finish selections and a 3D view of key rooms. Ask what happens if site measurements differ from the first drawing.

4. Who will actually supervise my site?

Meet that person before signing. Ask how often the designer visits, who answers trades after hours, how progress is reported and how many sites that supervisor runs simultaneously. A beautiful office cannot compensate for absent supervision.

5. How do payments and changes work?

Payments should follow visible milestones: design freeze, factory order, delivery, installation and handover. Ask for a written change-order process so additional work is priced and approved before it starts.

The twelve-question shortlist

  1. What is included and excluded?
  2. Which material brands are specified?
  3. Who measures and owns errors?
  4. Which drawings will I receive?
  5. Who supervises daily?
  6. How often are updates sent?
  7. What is the realistic timeline?
  8. How are delays reported?
  9. How are changes priced?
  10. What warranties are written?
  11. What remains payable at handover?
  12. Can I speak to a recent client?

FAQ

Quick answers

A designer adds value when several trades must coordinate; one simple wardrobe may not need full design management.

Mumbai practices may charge a fixed fee, percentage or include design margin in execution. Compare total scope, not fee labels.

Three detailed quotes are enough if they specify the same scope and materials.

Large advances before drawings, unnamed materials, verbal exclusions and no identified site supervisor.
